Peter Edelman talks about this startling statistic and today’s economy. The Center and our partners advocate for a bold jobs agenda to jump start the economy and relieve the massive suffering caused by historic levels of unemployment and underemployment. We fight to make sure that an unfair burden does not fall on the shoulders of Americans who have to live paycheck to paycheck.

Edelman is currently a professor at Georgetown University Law Center. Edelman worked as a top advisor to Senator Robert F. Kennedy and worked for the Clinton administration until his resignation in 1996. He left the Clinton administration in protest of the 1996 welfare reform legislation.

The presumptive GOP nominee appeared before a D.C. audience where he proclaimed education to be “the civil-rights issue of our era.”

Mitt Romney’s early approach to addressing the Latino community might best be described as a dip of his toe in the water, not a headlong dive into the pool.

It’s clear that after a bruising primary in which Romney scratched tooth and nail to convince conservatives to make him the GOP’s presidential nominee, his campaign slowly shifted to reach out to other voter groups, including Latinos, who will eventually help decide the election this fall.

Romney’s latest olive branch came on Wednesday, when he delivered a major address on education to the Latino Coalition, an influential small-business group in Washington, D.C.

And just the other day Rep. Steve King, in his 2012 reelection bid, analogized that letting specific groups of immigrants in to the U.S. was similar to breeding dogs. Sadly, this was not the first or second or even third time Rep. King has made sweeping, racist remarks against minority communities in the U.S. It’s a habit of his, and one that Google’s financial support helps to perpetuate.

There are more than 2,000 immigrant business owners in Iowa – and Google co-founder Sergey Brin is himself an immigrant from the former Soviet Union. So how can Google justify campaign contributions to an elected official that espouses racism and hate?

Tell Google to follow their own motto – “don’t be evil” – and demand that their PAC not give a penny to Representative Steve King in the 2012 election cycle.

Iowa Rep.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid talks same-sex marriage, DREAM Act on “Al Punto”

By UNIVISION NEWS

One of the highest-ranking members of the Democratic Party doesn’t share President Obama’s newfound support for same-sex marriage, but he won’t let his personal beliefs affect the party’s platform.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) affirmed that he still believes marriage should be between a man and a woman, after Obama this week became the first sitting U.S. president to back same-sex marriage. But his personal views won’t get in the way of politics on this lightning-rod, election year issue.

“I think that I’m not going to stand in the way of people because it has no impact upon me or my family,” he said during an exclusive interview on Univision’s Al Punto.

Reid added that he thinks the announcement won’t have much of an impact on voter support for Obama or the presumptive Republican nominee, Mitt Romney.

“I think that’s not going to be a factor. I think that the number one issue in this country today is the economy, and I think that’s what people are going to be focused on,” he said.”

Reid also addressed a pared-down version of the DREAM Act being drafted by Republican Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) The top senator, who slammed Rubio’s proposal as a hollow “half-measure” just last month, softened his tone on the proposal, but still indicated he’s not a supporter.

“I don’t throw cold water on it. I do say, Marco, give us something in writing. I’ll be happy to look at it. I’ve been a big advocate for the Dream Act,” Reid, who brought up the current DREAM Act for a vote in 2010, said.

“So let’s see what Marco’s going to come up with as far as — like it’s easy to go around and talk about it. He says one thing to one group, another thing to another group. Put it in writing,” he added.
